What it does

Removes emoji from the text. Emoji are often made of several code points combined. Skin tone modifiers (👍🏽), family and profession emoji joined by zero-width joiners (👨‍👩‍👧), flags (🇰🇷 = two regional indicator symbols) and keycaps (1️⃣) are removed as one unit so no fragments are left behind.

Symbols that are kept

Characters that were originally used as text symbols, such as ©, ®, ™ and ☺, are kept when they appear on their own without the emoji presentation selector (U+FE0F). The same character is removed when a selector follows it and it is displayed as a color emoji. To remove ordinary symbols such as ★ ☆ ♥ too, use Remove special characters.

Options

  • Tidy leftover double spaces: on by default. Removing the emoji from Thanks 👍 a lot leaves two spaces; this option shrinks them to one and also removes trailing spaces.

When to use it

Use it when moving social media posts or chat messages into a report, subtitles or a database, or when you must enter text into a system that does not support emoji.

Keycap emoji (1️⃣) are removed together with their digit. To keep the digit, add a Find and replace rule in an earlier step that removes the keycap symbol.
